Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Saturday slammed the Congress for nominating Sachin Tendulkar to the Rajya Sabha, terming it a ploy to distract public attention. He claimed that the party had resorted to the step only to enhance its ‘sinking’ image.”The Congress is like a sinking ship. It denied him (Tendulkar) the Bharat Ratna and now it is nominating him to the Rajya Sabha as a tactic to distract the media and the people from issues such as black money and corruption,” Ramdev said. The yoga guru claimed political pressure was being put on Tendulkar to accept the nomination.

Kamara; Ambassador Rosemary A. DiCarlo, U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative, U.S. Mission to the United Nations; and Futures Without Violence President Esta Soler participated in the Avon Awards ceremony. ABC News Anchor Bianna Golodryga moderated the event. The CSW, which this year focuses on the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls, drew nearly 6,000 representatives from UN Member States, UN entities and NGOs from around the world for a two-week session. Last year, the Avon Foundation for Women presented its first Avon Communications Awards at the 2nd World Conference of Women’s Shelters in Washington, D.C.Salma Hayek Pinault at the United Nations where she presented the 2nd Avon Communications Awards honoring global leaders working to end violence against women.Credit/Copyright: Multivu.comAvon CEO Sheri McCoy emphasized the critical importance of communications in ending violence against women as she shared highlights of an Avon Foundation-funded survey to be released in June that analyzed bystander behavior in situations relating to partner violence and dating and sexual abuse. “People are willing to speak out, but they don’t always know how to recognize the signs of abuse or how best to intervene. Avon believes communications and education will help bystanders become interveners and help break the cycle of violence against women,” said McCoy.2nd Avon Communications Awards Winners The Avon Foundation recognized non-governmental organizations from Pakistan, Tanzania, Nepal, Peru, and a governmental organization from the Ukraine, for their exemplary communications campaigns that are helping change communities, policies, institutions and behaviors to end violence against women. An international panel of judges selected the winning campaigns from more than 425 communications submitted to the Communications X-Change by 119 organizations in 46 countries, ranging from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. The X-Change, a digital global communications library funded by the Avon Foundation and managed by Futures Without Violence, enables organizations and advocates throughout the world to find, share, and learn from the best communications material focused on ending violence against women and children. The winning organizations, which will each receive an Avon Foundation grant to fund the continuation of their work, are:*INNOVATIVE CAMPAIGN AWARD Bytes for All (Pakistan) – “Take back the Tech!” This campaign seizes upon the spread of technology in Pakistan to help strengthen women’s use of technology to raise awareness about Violence Against Women by using online tools. The campaign also strategically involves important public figures from judges to movie stars using social media to spread the word to “take back the tech.” The print and online communications materials pave the way for young women to use these online technology tools, often off-limits in Pakistan, to make their voices heard.*BREAK THE SILENCE AWARD EngenderHealth (Tanzania) – “Champion Project” The “Champion Project” video is part of a five-year effort to engage men in Tanzania by increasing their involvement in addressing underlying gender issues and power imbalances in relationships. The video aims to turn men from bystanders to champions with its key message, “Violence is everyone’s problem. Be a role model. Earn respect by standing up to violence.”*COMMUNITY CHANGE AWARD Equal Access (Nepal) – “Voices – Samajhdari” Involving community members as writers, reporters, radio technicians and commentators, “Voices – Samajhdari” by Equal Access enables women to be agents of their own change – reshaping community attitudes through their own messages that resonate with their closest neighbors and throughout Nepal. This weekly 30-minute radio program directly integrates voices from rural communities in audio collected by 12 female ‘community reporters’ who are themselves survivors of violence, able to discuss topics and issues that otherwise would be considered off-limits.*X-CHANGE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING GOVERNMENT COMMUNICATION AWARD State Service for Youth and Sports & International Women’s Rights Center ‘La Strada’ (Ukraine) – “Stop Violence” The Government of Ukraine, working with UNICEF Ukraine and NGOs, leveraged the 2012 Euro Football Cup to field a large campaign aimed at men to use communications to raise social awareness of the need to end violence against women. In their “Red Card” poster, the Ukrainian singer Ani Lorak speaks a soccer fan’s language to advocate against sexual violence. Recognition of this campaign highlights the important development coalitions among government agencies, UNICEF and NGOs working collaboratively for greater impact across society.*GLOBAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNICATION PCI Media Impact (Peru) – “Strong Women, Strong Voices” The “Strong Women, Strong Voices” radio program—using radio, a favored medium particularly in rural communities—skillfully weaves together stories using language accessible to both Spanish-speaking and indigenous women that dramatizes the stories of women overcoming prejudice, abuse and sexual violence. Radio and storytelling is very adaptable, but real impact comes also from an organization with both a strong infrastructure and well-analyzed and realized strong theory of change. To view the award-winning campaigns in each of the five categories, as well as the 19 finalists’ campaigns, click here.Other Avon Foundation Speak Out Against Domestic Violence InitiativesAt the 2nd Avon Communications Awards: Speaking Out About Violence Against Women, Salma Hayek Pinault launched the Avon Empowerment Charm Necklace in recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8th. One hundred percent of the net profits from the necklace’s sale will benefit the Avon Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program. The silver tone necklace features the infinity symbol, which in Avon’s Speak Out campaign represents lives with unlimited potential when free from violence.“I have been a proud supporter of the Avon Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program since it launched in 2004,” said Salma Hayek Pinault, Avon Foundation for Women Ambassador. “I encourage everyone to purchase, wear or give the Avon Empowerment Charm Necklace to help raise vital funds for domestic abuse support services.”

Rizvi comes out of office after 40 days, leads surprise procession in front of the party office on Saturday morning. Photo: CollectedBNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came out on the streets on Saturday morning after 40 days of his hiding in the party headquarters to avoid arrest. The opposition BNP leader led a surprise procession of some 13 to 14 party activists in front of the party central office at Naya Paltan early in Saturday morning and entered the party office immediately after the procession. There were no members of law enforcement in the area around 6:00am when the BNP leader took out the procession demanding release of party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.The procession was organised as part of the party’s scheduled procession programme in all thanas of the capital, protesting the foiling of a BNP programme on Thursday.Party insiders said Rizvi has been staying in the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters since 30 January to avoid arrest.A special court sent BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia to jail on 8 February after sentencing her to five years in jail in a graft case. Over 5,000 party activists were arrested across the country centring on Khaleda’s incarceration.BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the authorities are selectively arresting party organisers so that they cannot forge a street campaign against the government.Talking to Prothom Alo, Rizvi said, “There is an arrest warrant against me and that’s why I took part in the scheduled programme early morning.”
A Kickstarter campaign for Hendo Hoverboards – advertised as the “world’s first REAL hoverboard” – kicked off on the crowdfunding platform this morning. While the project – which aims to raise $250,000 within the next 54 days – isn’t an Internet prank, the product is very much still a prototype instead of, say, a replica of Marty McFly’s tripped out multicolored board. While the Hendo board indeed hovers, it only does so one inch above the ground, and only if the ground in question is a conductive surface. Other drawbacks: the battery lasts a mere seven minutes and there are currently only 10 prototypes, each priced at $10,000 on Kickstarter.Related: This Viral Hoverboard Video Looks Ridiculously Awesome — Yet Sadly FakeSo…we won’t be hovering to work anytime soon.According to Greg and Jill Henderson, the couple behind the Kickstarter campaign, the hoverboard project is really just a brilliant marketing play. “That’s why we picked the hoverboard: to capture that attention,” Greg Henderson told The New York Times. “If one in 10 people realize there is another use for this stuff, that would be a great success.”Ultimately, the couple wants to draw peoples’ attention to hovering technology’s potential applications beyond the board, in industries “that range from warehouse operations, to building foundation improvements, to novel methods of electromechanical fluid separation,” they write on the project’s Kickstarter page. What if, they ask, the same technology that makes their prototype levitate could be harnessed to do vastly more useful things, including saving entire buildings from earthquake damage by elevating them above the ground? If that seems pretty far out (OK, it definitely does), the Hendersons also have ideas for more contained applications, such as using electromagnets to slightly elevate individual train cars, making them easier to move around train yards.Related: U.S. Army Developing a Real Live ‘Iron Man’ SuitIn this lets-make-more-things-hover vein, backers who pledge $299 toward the project will receive a developer’s kit, enabling them to build their own hovering contraptions.”Our goal is inspiring co-creation with the entire community of tinkerers and makers and outside thinkers,” Greg Henderson told The Verge. “I guarantee one thing: we’re going to be surprised at the results. They’ll come up with all kinds of uses: planes, trains, automobiles, factory automation. Those are some of the easy ones.”For a $100 pledge, 250 backers will receive a five-minute hoverboard ride at the metal-lined hoverpark the couple has built in Silicon Valley. Shell out $1,000, and you’ll receive a full hour on the board, complete with personal instruction from a ‘hoverboard instructor.’Which is as close to Marty McFly as you’re going to get. For now, at least.Related: Publicity Stunt Du Jour: Spend the Night at IKEA Thanks to AirbnbCheck out a video of the hoverboard in action below. Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now 7 min read When entrepreneurs and early-stage founders want to make smart decisions with their customer data, they may use third-party tools such as Google Analytics, but in fact there are dozens of other software tools out there to think about.Related: 5 Powerful CRM Techniques That Can Help in MarketingThose choices include business intelligence software, data warehouse software, customer service help desks, CRMs, attribution tools, heat maps and behavior marketing automation software — all powered by customer data.In addition, when you combine some of these tools in the right way, you can harness behavioral data and user information to allow your marketing and product teams to facilitate your customers journey to conversion. Some startups that have raised a lot of VC funding may even end up hiring whole teams of engineers to build a vast ecosystem of big-data technologies to work with custom algorithms and analytics. Oscar Health is an example. But if you have only a few software engineers and need them to work on your app or product, you might want to be more selective about the tools you choose. Here is a list of four qualitative feedback and marketing-analytics categories of tools to help you better understand your users and make smarter product decisions. 1. Mid-funnel customer journey analytics tools At the moment, few analytics tools can track clicks, custom events and customer sales-funnel journeys for startups but the few that are in this category include Kissmetrics, Mixpanel, Hubspot and Amplitude. The one I would focus on is Heap Analytics. This is a cloud-based analytics SaaS solution that preconfigures the necessary integration to track every user form submission, page view, touch, swipe, gesture, tap and click-through on mobile, tablet and web devices.Related: These 4 CRM Tools Will Make the Management Part EffortlessHow it works: Heap uses its own data lake and a data warehouse it has on Amazon Redshift. The software analyzes and collects raw web data and mobile navigational information.Heap SQL, one of the product’s features, can connect all your analytics data to your favorite business intelligence tools, such as Tableau, Looker and others. You can measure user-app sign-ups, run A/B tests (to figure out how likely it is that a user will complete a set of actions inside your product) and conduct funnel checkout tests. You can also automatically connect the tool to customer-focused app platforms like Salesforce, Marketo, email and payment-services providers to capture every part of the sales journey. A startup like Casper has used Heap to increase conversions on certain audience segments checkouts by as much as 20 percent.2. Business intelligence SQL analytics software When you want to use a deeper level of businesswide analytics to improve your product market fit, or when the questions you’re asking are more complex, it’s time to look into business intelligence tools that connect you to data warehouse tools: These tools include Informatica and Amazon Redshift.Business Intelligence analytics tools (BI) are software tools for capturing, categorizing and transforming raw data from customers, prospects, suppliers and internal department sources. These tools also capture external data extracted from third-party systems, email, social media platforms or even macroeconomic data; this is data that businesses can use to make more actionable decisions to increase profits or improve operational efficiency.BI software tools are useful for startups that want to obtain ad hoc-style reports, data discovery and data visualization with real-time access. The large number of BI vendors out there includes Domo, Tableau, Qlik, Tibco and Mode but I would focus first on Looker.Looker has a smoother learning curve than other BI tool vendors. And while startups can do a lot with all the apps and tools available, those apps don’t all talk to one other, don’t all have API’s or are expensive to query. The Looker analytics platform, in contrast, aims to pull all of the data you need into a warehouse or database, then query directly from that database. With Looker, you can query and analyze information across all the apps in which your company has data, and within one platform, without complicated API calls. The process is similar to that of other distributed file systems such as Hadoop or other SQL-compliant databases. Startups such as Glossier use Looker BI analytics. 3. Data warehousing tools Data warehousing tools were developed to help organizations build enterprise data solutions and extract insights from structured data, from among different systems. They do this in a way that streamlines response times throughout reporting tools. Data warehousing tools transform the data from these systems into a format that makes querying large, complicated datasets faster for reporting users.Fortune 500 enterprise companies traditionally have vast data centers on their company premises, but data warehouses and their tools are helping smaller companies by moving some of that information into a cloud-based data warehouse.Recent trends have spawned new data warehouse tools in the cloud, such as Amazon Redshift, Microsoft Azure, Teradata and Google Bigquery. These tools provide improved query functionality and are built to be cheaper and more scalable than traditional on-premises data stores or privately hosted database servers. A good data-warehousing solution provider is Informatica. It has a popular tool called Informatica PowerCenter, which is an enterprise extract, transform and load tool (ETL) used for preparing data for analysis within enterprise data warehouses. The PowerCenter offers access to almost any data source within one platform. These ETL tools help companies develop cloud data warehouses and perform queries faster. They are designed for developers and IT professionals to perform data-mining and analysis reports across dozens of applications, such as NetSuite, Oracle, Salesforce and SAP Concur.Startups such as Sendgrid have used Informatica products in combination with Looker and Amazon Redshift to integrate into cloud-based data warehouse solutions from legacy systems. 4. Sales and customer-service support tools For many early-stage startups, getting customer feedback and users’ perspectives is crucial for making the correct iterations of their product or app and determining its best positioning. In the beginning your business should be doing qualitative customer development or figuring out the best solution for a good product-market fit or a significant user base. There are all different types of sales-activation and customer-support, or CRM tools, for doing this. These systems have out-of-the-box simple reporting solutions, but can feed into a data warehouse for complex reporting. Products like Zendesk and or Salesforce can help give your sales and customer success teams a better context about each user and enable these teams to provide more personalized support, to turn prospects into paying subscribers and brand loyalists.Zendesk is a software solution that streamlines these communications in an easy-access configuration which can improve response times and help satisfy your startup customers. Peloton, the live-streaming cycling class startup, for example, started using Zendesk to offer better customer-experience help for general questions. This tool offers live-chat support for technical issues, as well as support tickets for any phone calls received, to improve customer loyalty. Conclusion The goal of any of these tools is to help you capture and utilize data for insights that can help you make decisions more quickly or in a more collaborative way with your teams. Related: Why Data Analytics Can Help Drive Sales For Your Business Customer data is crucial to all parts of your startup’s team, whether it’s connected to the sales, product, marketing, design or support categories. That’s why it’s so important, for your company growth, to put together the best combination of tools to connect your data sources into one overall repository.
