Wellington girls are quickly eliminated from sub-state losing to Buhler 69-32

Considering that Wellington went on a five-game winning streak thereafter and nearly beat Andale on Thursday, there was great optimism going into the game for Wellington fans.It didn’t happen. Buhler built a quick 23-10 first-quarter lead implementing a full-court press that Wellington couldn’t break. And Wellington has been feasting on the press all season.“We have a guard-oriented team, and for whatever reason, everything left us all at the same time,” Adams said. “Every guard we had, had trouble handling the ball, shooting the ball. I think a little of it was nerves.”By the half, Buhler was leading 34-17. In the second half, it got worse as the Maroon outscored the Red 21-10 in the third en-route to a 37-point win.Buhler’s two big girls inside left Wellington without answers. Alivia Owens scored 19 points while Amaleigh Mattison had 14.Wellington had no girls in double figures. Now comes the off-season. Wellington has every starter returning to a team that brings back every starter including three freshmen and a sophomore.“We have a good chance of being really good next season,” Adams said. “But we are going to need to work hard over the summer.”Adams continued:“We need more mental growth and physical growth. We need to be more mentally strong especially when an opponent comes right at us. Of course, we need to get into the weight room and get quicker and stronger.”Wellington finished the year at 11-10 and had no returning starters.Wellington —  10   7   10   5 —   32Buhler —          23   11   21   14 —  69Wellington: Clift 9, Henning 8, Zeka 6, Myr.
