Share General Manager of DOWASCO Mr. Bernard Ettinoffe.Water Area One, which covers the villages from Mero to Castle Comfort in Roseau and is considered one of the most important water catchment and storage areas on the island, has received a major upgrade thanks to a twenty-million dollar loan from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). As part of this upgrade, a 250 000 gallon storage tank was constructed at Antrim Valley and an upgraded filtration system installed. On Wednesday, 20 May 2015, officials of the Dominica Water and Sewerage Company Limited (DOWASCO) along with various government officials visited the newly constructed storage tank in Antrim Valley.General manager of DOWASCO, Bernard Ettinoffe indicated at the site visit that the company is still looking to increase the capacity of the filtration system. “The problem with the filtration system it was designed to put out 350 cubic meters of treated water per hour but the demand on the system is about 840 cubic meters per hour”.“So part of the major upgrade we are doing for Water One Area is the increase in capacity of that plant so that we can get to over 840 cubic meters of treated water per hour from that plant,” Ettinoffe explained. He added that this is significant because the facility serves the Princess Margaret Hospital as well as schools and the City of Roseau. Ettinoffe informed that the new tank was built different from the others around the island as it is a glass-fused tank. “The outside is steel but on the inside it is fused with glass to ensure that the water quality is improved; it is new technology and quicker to construct”.According to Ettinoffe, this is the first of this kind and size in Dominica and DOWASCO plans to do “our own analysis and decide how we go forward with either concrete or glass-fused camp”.“That tank coupled with the Morne Bruce storage tank and the Massacre storage tank has increased the water storage capacity of Area One by 850, 0000 gallons over the last three years. The government of Dominica is investing twenty million dollars on the upgrade of this major water system,” he indicated. He further informed that a building on the grounds of the facility will be converted to the new DOWASCO Water lab, which is “an upgraded lab with facilities to do water testing, sampling and various things that are critical in providing portable water to our communities”. He added that the upgrade of Water Area One will also see the intake at Antrim move one mile upstream and this will provide an elevation in excess of 150 feet higher than the existing elevation “which means that we will continue to serve the communities in a much better way. It will also allow us to supply water even when it rains and the river gets brown”. Ettinoffe said that the plant will solve one of the biggest water problems in Dominica that is, “the discoloration of the water when it rains and soil washes into the water”.“This plant will be upgraded to deal with that and moving the intake higher up to more solid ground will assist greatly with that,” he said.He urged Dominicans to manage and conserve water, in spite of the fact that “we have an abundance of water” because “where most of the water is, is not where people leave. So we have to bring the water to the people and the sources that we use to bring the water to people are some of the more vulnerable sources”.– / 7center_img Share Share Tweetlast_img
