Argonauts Hit the Road to Georgia This Weekend

first_imgPrint Friendly Version PENSACOLA, Fla. –  This weekend, the UWF volleyball team will travel to Georgia to face West Georgia and Valdosta State. On Friday the Argos will play against West Georgia at 5:00 PM CT and then will play at Valdosta State on Saturday at 6:00 PM CT. ABOUT UWF: The Argonauts are now 10-5 overall and 3-0 in conference after sweeping the opening week of GSC play. UWF won in five over Alabama Huntsville and Mississippi College and then won in three sets over West Alabama, all at home.Senior Jordyn Poppen is off to a great start this season already recording 204 kills 55 digs and 24 blocks. This week, Poppen was named the GSC Offensive Player of the Week for as she earned her 1,000th career kill on Saturday against UWA. In that match she also hit a .586 with 17 kills and no errors.Poppen also recorded her 10th double-double of the season with in the UAH match with 22 kills and 13 digs and against Mississippi College with 20 kills and 15 digs. In total last week, Poppen had 59 kills on 126 attempts with 11 errors. She also totaled 37 digs eight aces and six blocks.Another big hitter for the Argos is Freshman Veresia Yon. Yon had recorded 135 kills hitting .359 this season so far. She also is active on the net and has put up 55 blocks and has scored 176.5 points for the Argos. On the defensive end, Junior Ashton Marshall continues to hold down the court with 257 digs averaging 4.67 digs per set. She is followed by UWF’s setters Brogan Wallin and Taylor Vaneekeren who have 103 and 108 digs. Wallin has tallied 276 assists this season averaging 5.11 assists per set and Vaneekeren has 323 assists averaging 6.09 assists per set. ABOUT WEST GEORGIA: UWG comes into this match with the Argos as the only other team in the GSC that is still undefeated in conference play at 3-0. They are also 8-6 overall. Last week, West Georgia took wins over Lee, Shorter and Valdosta State, while only dropping a set to the Hawks.  UWF won the last meeting, 3-0 in Carrolton, Ga. on October 23rd last year. The Argos lead the all-time series 32-3 and are 14-2 in Carrollton. UWF’s last loss to UWG was in 2013.UWG has an outstanding player this year who is making a mark as a freshman. Tierra White has recorded 161 kills on the season with an attack pct. of .413. White was named the GSC Freshman of the Week this week as she led the Wolves to a 3-0 record to begin GSC play. Against Shorter, she had 10 blocks, setting a school record. Overall, she had 17 blocks, 38 kills, and hit .516 for the week. This is the second time this year that White has been named GSC Freshman of the Week.ABOUT VALDOSTA STATE: VSU comes into the match against the Argos 2-1 in the GSC and 10-6 overall. Last week the Blazers only loss was to West Georgia, but they earned wins over Shorter and Lee. VSU will play Auburn Montgomery on Friday before hostin UWF.  The last time the two teams played, the Argos came out on top 3-1 on October 30 last year. The overall record between the two teams is 30-6 with the Argos ahead and the overall away record has the Argos only losing 4 matches in The Complex making it a 13-4 record. The last loss the Argos had to the Blazers was in 2015 at VSU in a 3-2 loss. For the Blazers, Setter Tammy Reyes Perez is having a great year with a total of 420 assists averaging 8.24 assists per set. Reyes Perez also has 128 digs, 59 kills and 14 service aces this season. Another player to watch is outside hitter Dariah Powell.
