Russia’s got a new robot that looks like it’s ready to go to work for the Donbot alongside Clamps and Joey Mousepad. Its name is FEDOR, and it can totally fire bullets out of its guns. They see me rollin’, they hatin’Don’t reach for your bugout bag just yet. Russian officials have offered their most sincere reassurances on Twitter that FEDOR is not, in fact, an attempt to build a real-life version of some nightmarish Hollywood killing machine. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said that “we are not creating a Terminator, but artificial intelligence that will be of great practical significance in various fields.”Teaching it to ambidextrously fire two pistols is just part of the fine motor skills training program they’ve set up for FEDOR. Other tasks the bot has already mastered include using various power tools, driving a car, and giving fist bumps. In a demo video posted to YouTube, it also looks like FEDOR can act as an “Avatar” robot and remotely mimic a user’s actions.FEDOR wasn’t always a gunslinger. It was originally intended for rescue missions, and now Russia is gearing up to send the bot on a journey into space in 2021. It’s purpose? Well, obviously it’s to hijack a shipment of the finest Zuban cigars. If the official statement from Rogozin isn’t comforting enough for you, then you can at least take a little solace in the fact the FEDOR still appears to need a tether. A robot that can dual-wield pistols isn’t nearly as scary if you know its mobility is limited by an extension cord.
