Government to Revisit Criteria for National Awards UncategorizedJanuary 4, 2008 RelatedGovernment to Revisit Criteria for National Awards Advertisements RelatedGovernment to Revisit Criteria for National Awards FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail The process of awarding national honours to Jamaicans and foreign nationals will be the subject of review by a special committee chaired by Professor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies, the Hon. Rex Nettleford O.M.The committee had its first meeting at Jamaica House on Thursday (Jan. 3) with Prime Minister Bruce Golding who said a review of the criteria for award was timely based on concerns raised from time to time in the public domain. The Prime Minister was joined at the meeting by Hon. Olivia Grange, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth, and Sport, under whose Ministry the National awards fall.Mr. Golding said the revised criteria should not be so restrictive that the selection committee has a difficulty naming persons for award of national honours, but stated that the process needed ‘tightening up,’ including a decision on the number of awards that can be conferred, in order to guarantee their value. He said the committee should also make recommendations that would allow for the acknowledgement of more persons who render service at the community level. He said consideration should also be given to the treatment of groups, a category that is not currently accommodated within the status quo.The committee is expected to make a report to the Prime Minister by March for inclusion in the consideration of this year’s national honours and awards that are to be presented at King’s House on National Heroes Day. At the request of Prime Minister Golding the review committee is also expected to give an opinion on the creation of a Standing Committee to receive and make recommendations for the conferment of the Order of National Hero on Jamaicans deemed suitable to receive the award. In accepting the challenge, Chairman of the review committee, Professor Rex Nettleford said the underlying principle must be the need for Jamaicans at home and in the Diaspora be acknowledged in a manner that has a positive impact on the society.Other members of the committee present at Thursday’s meeting included, Professor Barry Chevannes, Seragh Lakasingh, Ambassador Madge Barrett, Merrick Needham and Hugh Nash. Senator Oswald Harding, Professor Verene Shepherd and Mrs. Jean Barnes complete the membership of the committee. RelatedGovernment to Revisit Criteria for National Awards
I’m sure you’ve seen the recent news of unrest in Pakistan. As things were coming to a head, I was part of a team that was conducting the inaugural ATLS program in Karachi, Pakistan. As the president of Pakistan was declaring a state of emergency and suspending the constitution, the last of us were on our way home. Hopefully, things will settle down quickly, and organizers will be able to continue their plan, which includes PHTLS for prehospital providers and training for nurses as well. We were working at the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, which is a secure facility in Karachi that provides training and testing for doctors in Pakistan and several other countries. The facility has classrooms, libraries and e-learning facilities, as well as living quarters for faculty and students. With all that was going on while we were there, we felt quite safe in these facilities and the attention of our hosts. The program in Karachi may sound like an example of a rare occurrence — representatives from various countries coming together to improve prehospital care in developing countries. However, it’s just a personal and recent example of international cooperation that takes place all over the world. On any given day, it’s likely that U.S. paramedics, physicians and nurses are working with our brothers and sisters in established and developing countries.Back at home, I’m happy to have been a part of this and feel strongly that this type of cooperation — especially when it’s not easy — will save lives in many ways. First, the training will give the country’s medical personnel a chance to use their skills and passion to give the best possible care. Second, these types of international cooperatives teach all of us about one another and the benefits of sharing knowledge of science and culture — bridging gaps, and finding common missions and passions. Although the attention to trauma in much of Europe and the Americas has resulted in a reduction in deaths due to trauma, in this part of the world death due to trauma is on the rise. In his address to the media during a recognition of the inaugural ATLS program, Professor Zafarullah Chaudhry, the president of the college, described the country’s recent history of earthquakes, road traffic injuries and other examples of trauma that require an organized approach. He continued that countless lives could have been saved with the training that 16 Pakistani doctors went through during the week. The course is the beginning, and trauma systems planning and prehospital education are the keys to the overall plan for Pakistan. Given the diverse populations — including congested urban settings and sparsely populated rural areas — getting EMS organized in Pakistan is a huge undertaking. In the vicinity of Lahore, a system similar to 9-1-1, called 1122, was recently inaugurated. Results of implementing the 1122 system have been encouraging, and Pakistani officials hope to expand further as they learn. An international team consisted of Dr. Christoph Kaufmann (ATLS International Coordinator) from Portland, Ore.; Dr. John Kortbeek (ATLS Chair) from Calgary, Canada; Dr. Jameel Ali from Toronto, Canada; and Dr. Subash Gautam from United Arab Emirates. It also included Prof. Zafarullah Chaudhry, Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz and Prof. Irshad Waheed — Pakistani physicians trained in the U.S., — and Dr. Mohammad Farooq Afzal and Dr. Kamran Khalid Khawaja — Pakistani physicians trained in Saudi Arabia. What we found when we arrived was a dedicated staff; the doctors and nurses we worked with were committed to working toward improving opportunities for improved trauma outcomes and to participate in the international community that focuses on improving those outcomes.
It’s been almost three years since Tony winner Ben Platt took his final bow in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, and he’s been going nonstop ever since. In that time, he’s released his first album Sing to Me Instead, starred in The Politician on Netflix (which just announced its season two release date), gone on tour and has been announced to star in the movie adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along with his BFF Beanie Feldstein. As if that weren’t enough, Platt’s concert at Radio City Music Hall was filmed for Netflix. Broadway.com chatted with the star about the night he’ll never forget and more. Ben Platt (Photo:David Giesbrecht/Netflix ) Ben Platt Judith Light and Bette Midler in The Politician (Photo: Giovanni Rufino/Netflix) Having been on vocal rest the week leading up to the concert, Platt was ready to hit the dance floor and let his voice be heard. “My birthday had been three days before, so I turned my birthday party into the after-party,” he said. “As soon as the concert was over, I had a party with all my family and friends. I curated my favorite playlist, and we just danced and drank. It was one of the best days of my life.”Now that the concert is available for all to enjoy, Platt is preparing to dive back into the world of Payton Hobart thanks to The Politician’s second season dropping on Netflix on June 19. “Payton is a lot more adult,” Platt said. “He kind of gets to grow up a bit. It centers around an election where Judith Light and I are going head to head, which is just an amazing sentence to say. Certainly, my favorite part of the season is watching Judith and Bette [Midler] work together. I think they give really hilarious performances and people are going to go apeshit, for lack of a better word.” Although this isn’t the premire he pictured for his Netflix special, Platt is excited about fans getting to enjoy the concert while being quarantined. “I think it couldn’t have come at a more, unfortunately, at a more opportune time,” he said. “People can’t experience any live theater or live performance right now, and I think this is a really way to feel like you’re in a room with people at a show. I wanted it to feel that way before all this happened. It strangely works really well for the moment. I think, hopefully, it will bring people a nice escape.”Originally filmed on September 29, 2019, Platt had many pals in the audience. From former Pitch Perfect co-stars Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow to his Dear Evan Hansen family—Michael Park, Andrew Barth Feldman— and more. The love was almost too much for Platt to handle. “It was a beautiful crossroads of my life—like the best bar mitzvah ever,” he said. “Everybody from my life, all in the same room together, felt like the end of leg one of the journey. I really tried to do my best to prepare in every way so that I could be present when the moment actually came, and I think it paid off.”After an hour and a half of belting, dancing and telling personal stories about dealing with anxiety and coming out, Platt’s time at Radio City came to too quick of an end. “There’s always a planned encore, and you always hope that people will stay and keep clapping so you can come out and sing again,” Platt said. “Because of the cameras, I was supposed to come off stage and then wait for a certain amount of time, so they could readjust and such. The audience’s energy was just so special and loud that everything else just went out of my mind. I just ran back on stage without telling anyone I was going back out. The way that that moment is filmed is a tiny bit janky, but it’s so worth it to me. I just needed to get back out there. I’ll always remember that.” During this season of quarantine, which made Merrily We Roll Along filming come to a “grinding halt,” Platt has had the opportunity to duet with both Feldstein and Idina Menzel. “I’ve always loved to sing with Ariana [Grande] someday,” Platt said. “Cynthia [Erivo] and I really haven’t gotten to sing together yet. We’re always singing on the same programs, and we’re always singing in the same spaces, but I think we’re waiting for that one special reason to sing together. So, I’m excited for whatever that becomes.”As for when Platt will return to Broadway? It will happen. “I miss everything about Broadway. I miss the lifestyle, the routine, the audience, the community. It’s my favorite thing. I’ll always want to do that the most. When, God willing, this all goes away and we can go back into theaters, I’m certainly looking to come back.”Watch the trailer of Ben Platt: Live From Radio City Music Hall below! “The audience’s energy was so special and loud that everything else went out of my mind. I ran back on stage without telling anyone. I just needed to get back out there.” View Comments Star Files

Cycling Mountain Bike Race The inaugural Niugini Electrical Rosso Cup Mountain Bike Race is all set to go on September 19th at the National Botanic Gardens in Lae, Morobe Province. Over 600 cyclists in and around Lae City will be competing to see who goes home with the first ever mountain bike trophies and other prizes worth up to K40,000. The chairman of the organising committee, Ian Ellery, said preparations are going well despite the rain and other factors hindering the pace of track preparations and main arena setup. “It has been quite the challenge to put a premier event for Lae City amidst these challenging times including Covid-19 pandemic and tough economic situation the country is facing,” Ian said. He thanked the major sponsor (naming rights) Niugini Electrical, for stepping in to give the event a boost during these tough times. “Niugini Electrical has been in Lae for a long time and is a significant contributor to the economy, and we’re so fortunate for the company to step in to support the event.” Ian also acknowledged the Lae City Authority led by CEO Neil Ellery, for taking the lead in organising the event. “LCA is doing a lot of positive growth type activities and changes in the city, to try to instrument a change in mindset for our people so that we can all take ownership of the second largest city in PNG and look after it, contribute to its development for future generations. It’s all about creating growth, opportunity and development,” Ian said. Lae MP John Rosso said Lae city is the economic and industrial hub, and was once a beautiful, conducive, peaceful and safe place for everyone but it had deteriorated over the years. “Hence, this mountain bike race was initiated because we want Lae to be a safe place again, bringing families together to enjoy the togetherness atmosphere and we can all share the spirit of working together to make a safer and better Lae,” Rosso said. Niugini Dirt Tours is the event manager and working with the committee, preparations are on track to deliver a successful race. The race will start at 10.30am tomorrow and involves kids from 17 years and under, and senior men’s and women’s teams that will race on the longer tougher tracks. The event will also see the wheelchair and corporate team races, and the highlight race – Dash for Cash. Tickets are on sale at LCA or you can email [email protected] or text 70481048 for tickets, which are K10 for adults and K5 for kids. Newspaper AS claims that in case Betis qualify for the Europa League, they’ll seriously strengthen their squad, and the 31-year-old is one on the list. The first contacts have already started. The outlet says that the club already tried to sign Adrian last summer, but as confirmed by the goalkeeper, West Ham didn’t have any intention to negotiate his sale. But a ‘new context’ is expected for the next summer, so there’s this hope that a deal could be found in case a new attempt is made. Always depending on the Europa League qualification.Embed from Getty ImagesThe newspaper doesn’t really say how much Betis would spend on the deal, or what West Ham’s demands are. Adrián has a contract with the Hammers running until 2019, so there’s still time to get a decent fee with his sale.A lot will depend on how David Moyes sees the West Ham goalkeeping situation going forward.by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksTrending TodayForge of Empires – Free Online GameIf You Like to Play, this City-Building Game is a Must-Have. But former City defender Boateng hammered a volley into the net in the dying seconds, although his venomous strike appeared to take a deflection off Bayern’s Mario Goetze on its way in.Hart had pulled off a string of fine saves from Thomas Mueller, David Alaba, Goetze and Boateng but the Englandinternational was finally beaten as Bayern earned a deserved win in their opening Group E fixture.Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola said his team had trouble coping with Manchester City midfielders Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas early on.But he was happy to see his side’s aggression and positioning improve as the game wore on.“We played well,” he said.“The first 20 minutes Manchester City were better than we were and in the last 15 minutes of the second half we dominated.“We created a lot of goal chances. It’s not easy against Manchester City. We played with a lot of heart and we really deserved the victory.”With Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini serving a touchline ban, assistant coach Ruben Cousillas insisted City could recover against Roma and CSKA Moscow in their bid to qualify for the knockout stages.“I think we played a really good game and it was also good entertainment for the public because there were two teams that tried to score goals,” Cousillas said.“Conceding such a goal in the last minute, that’s what makes it really frustrating.“It’s not good to start with a defeat but there are five games left so that means it depends on us.” Manchester City had come back from two goals down to beat Bayern 3-2 at the same venue in last season’s group stages and they started with Edin Dzeko, who has yet to score this season, leading the attack instead of Sergio Aguero.Franck Ribery missed out through injury for the home team, who gave new signing Mehdi Benatia his first start on the right side of a three-man defence.Bayern were looking to banish memories of last season’s 4-0 semi-final defeat to Real Madrid in their last Champions League match in Munich and they almost made a sensational start to the new campaign.Goetze and Robert Lewandowksi released Mueller but after rounding Hart, the German attacker shot into the side netting inside 40 seconds.Dzeko tested Manuel Neuer after a good spell of possession for the visitors but soon the home team started to make an impression at the other end. After 19 minutes Juan Bernat crossed for Mueller, whose bullet header was brilliantly turned over the bar by Hart.Dzeko curled a left-foot shot just to the right of Neuer’s goal and Boateng then cut out a dangerous Navas cross as Guardiola became increasingly animated on the sideline.Guardiola pushed David Alaba from defence into midfield and the move almost brought an immediate reward when the Austrian shot wide from distance on the half hour.A minute later, the 22-year-old came closer still. He connected on the volley from Mueller’s touch down but the strike was once again beaten away by Hart. With 19 minutes left Hart fumbled Rafinha’s shot but the City keeper recovered superbly to deny Mueller on the rebound.A Champions League game involving Manchester City looked to be set to finish scoreless for the first time when Hart turned a ferocious long-strike from Boateng behind for a corner with three minutes left. But City were struggling to clear their lines and in the final minute Boateng caught the ball sweetly on the volley to beat Hart from the left edge of the penalty area. Sergio Aguero almost snatched a late equaliser for City but Bayern got their revenge for last season’s defeat in Munich.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000MUNICH, September 18-A superb strike by Jerome Boateng with a minute remaining earned Bayern Munich a dramatic 1-0 victory against Manchester City in their opening Champions League game of the season on Wednesday. An inspired performance by City goalkeeper Joe Hart looked to have secured his team a point in the meeting of the English and German champions at Munich’s Allianz Arena.

The semantically enriched common database Freebase announced today that it will soon reach the milestone of 4 million topics added to its collection. That’s 60% more than English Wikipedia’s 2,445,041 articles and almost half the size of Wikipedia’s full 10 million articles in 250 different languages. What is Freebase? It’s a database of information that’s organized by people and machines and is particularly well suited for machine reading. You’re not a machine – so why should you care? Read on.What You Can Do With FreebaseSemantic web expert and RWW contributor Alex Iskold spelled out the value of Freebase in great detail here in May. The long and short of it though is that Freebase learns fast through a combination of automated information harvesting and machine and human organization. It collects information from sources like Wikipedia and MusicBrainz and from user uploads and edits.Programmatic access to that now structured data allows all kinds of mashups to be built that “know things.” Check out, for example: Taught or Not – a cute little game that tests your knowledge of who influenced who throughout the history of thinkers.Shot or Not – another game that tests your knowledge of the causes of death of various famous people throughout history.Random Walk Through Influences – a little app that displays the chain of historical influence around any artist whose name you enter.Pull Quotes – If you have any interest in politics, check this out – it’s awesome!Powerset – the Natural Language search engine acquired by Microsoft last week uses Freebase, too.Seriously, ThoughObviously most of these are relatively frivolous use cases. Are there serious powerful use cases for Freebase yet? We’re not entirely sure. There are big gaps in the data, which is understandable, but the interface is so much harder to use than Wikipedia’s that there’s reason to be concerned about expectations of substantial human editing. The interface was much improved this summer and is now far more usable, but it’s still harder than it needs to be.We’ve certainly got our questions about Freebase, but we’re excited about what Metaweb is doing with it. They are smart, well funded and aiming high. The community there deserves congratulations on growing to 4 million reusable articles, something that the the celebrated English Wikipedia community can only aspire to.
